Emelec claims first with rooftop-restaurant venture

Ecuadorian Serie A football team Club Sport Emelec has claimed a first with the official unveiling of a rooftop restaurant at its Estadio George Capwell.

Blu Rooftop is a joint venture between the Guayaquil-based club and promoter Pío Montúfar, the main investor in the project. It occupies one of the new towers of the Estadio George Capwell that was completed following the redevelopment and expansion of the stadium that was finished in February 2017.

Spread across four levels, the main attraction of Blu is the rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of the city of Guayaquil. Work on the project began in 2019 and had been scheduled for completion in June 2020, only to be delayed by COVID-19.

Montúfar told local newspaper El Universo: “Today there are few places like this and this would be the first project of a rooftop (restaurant) at this height in a football stadium. First we think of it as a tourist spot and then we think of it as a little more fun for the general public. Then we decided to unite both things and that’s how Blu was born.”

The rooftop-restaurant will offer a variety of meals and cocktails in different environments, in order to promote a high-quality service. Blu will provide a parking service exclusively for its patrons, guarded by its own security.

Ivonne Tufiño, Emelec’s marketing manager, said that the objective of the project is to create “a multi-purpose venue” providing offerings “beyond sport”. To this end, Blu will be open on non-matchdays.

Emelec president, Nassib Neme, added: “The development of the project will be very useful not only for the Emelec fans, but also for the citizens of Guayaquil.”
