Azerbaijan set to receive new stadium

A new stadium with a capacity of more than 15,000 is set to be built in the Azerbaijani city of Aghdam.

Emin Huseynov, an Azerbaijani presidential special representative, has revealed plans for the new facility in Aghdam, which has been without a major football venue since Imarat Stadium was demolished in 1993.

Huseynov said that design work is currently underway on the project, which would also incorporate gyms and a secondary school. The stadium is set to be built away from the site of the former Imarat Stadium.

“The new stadium will not be built on the same site – not in the palace complex of Panahali Khan, but in another corner of the city with a more extensive infrastructure,” Huseynov said, according to the AzerNews website.

He added: “In this sports quarter, it is planned to build not only a football stadium but also indoor and outdoor gyms for various sports competitions. It is planned to design a secondary school with a sports base and a summer sports camp for children who come here from other regions of Azerbaijan.”

Imarat Stadium was demolished during the first Nagorno-Karabakh War, which saw Armenian troops seize the city of Aghdam. Azerbaijan regained control of the city in November 2020 following a ceasefire deal which ended the second Karabakh War.

Huseynov has previously detailed plans to rebuild Imarat Stadium but it has emerged that a new venue will be built at a separate site.

The largest stadium in Azerbaijan is the Olympic Stadium in the capital city of Baku. The 69,000-capacity stadium was a host venue during last year’s UEFA European Championship and also hosted the 2019 Europa League final.
