Italian Serie A club AS Roma recently organised what it claims is the first-ever escape room at a football stadium ahead of its match against Udinese.

The ‘Fan in a Box’ experience saw six supporters carry out a series of challenges at the Stadio Olimpico so they could watch the match, which Roma won 3-0.

Roma organised the escape room in association with Socios.com, the club’s official fan token partner. More than 400 fans entered the #BeMoreThanAFan initiative on the Socios.com platform to be in with a chance of winning a special VIP experience for the Udinese match.

The six winners were able to sample the Club 1927 hospitality area at the Stadio Olimpico before meeting club legend Vincent Candela. They were then shown to the Socios.com suite and started to watch the players warm up before the curtains dropped, obscuring the pitch from view.

At this point, Candela informed the fans that they were part of the ‘Giallorossi Escape Room’ and would have to overcome several obstacles if they wanted to draw back the curtains and see the pitch in time for kick-off.

One of the obstacles was a food challenge, which saw fans eat an “outrageous” interpretation of the traditional amatriciana pasta sauce. The “special” recipe was voted for by Roma fans on Socios.com through a previous contest that asked supporters which traditional Roman dish they would never want to eat.

The Socios.com suite and the adjoining room were set up in a few days and featured connected monitors and audio equipment, which enabled Roma to film the fans completing the tasks. ‘Fan in the box’ was also written on the exterior of the suite, which was visible from every part of the stadium.

Roma first linked up with Socios.com in 2019.
