Mullanpur Stadium will stage its first Indian Premier League cricket match next month when the Punjab Kings host the Delhi Capitals.

The 33,000-capacity stadium will serve as the new home of the Kings, and its first IPL match has been scheduled for March 23.

Construction work on the stadium commenced back in 2015. Over the last two years, the venue has transformed into a cricketing hub and hosted numerous domestic matches.

The Kings noted the “cutting-edge” herringbone drainage system at the stadium, which will ensure the rapid removal of any rainwater from the playing surface within 25 to 30 minutes of it falling.

The pitch has also been constructed using sand to provide superior stability and playing conditions. The stadium also features two international-standard dressing rooms and a gymnasium.

The Kings have previously played home matches at Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium, which has a capacity of around 27,000.

The 2024 IPL season begins on March 22 and will run until May 26. The Chennai Super Kings are the defending champions after defeating the Gujarat Titans in last year’s final.

Last year marked a return to the IPL’s traditional home-and-away format, with venues across India used for the first time since 2019. In 2022, matches were played in Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad, while in 2020 and 2021 the tournament was held in the United Arab Emirates due to the COVID-19 situation in India.
