The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced it has set an all-time record for total attendance in a single season.
The League said yesterday (Tuesday) that its eight-game Monday slate of games pushed the total attendance figure for the 2023-24 regular season to 22,560,634, surpassing the previous high of 22,436,532 set in 2022-23.
NHL games have played to 97% capacity at the 36 host venues, which include the 32 home arenas plus Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, which staged the Heritage Classic; Avicii Arena in Stockholm, which held Global Series games; T-Mobile Park in Seattle, host of the Winter Classic; and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The latter venue, home of the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets, set new records for Stadium Series games on February 17-18 as 70,328 fans saw the New Jersey Devils take on the Philadelphia Flyers, before 79,690 spectators viewed the game between the New York Rangers and New York Islanders.
The NHL’s total attendance record was broken with 18 games remaining in the 2023-24 regular season, which is due to conclude on Thursday.
The NHL’s announcement comes after the NBA this week detailed an all-time record for regular-season total attendance, average attendance, percentage of capacity, and number of sellouts for the second season in a row.
The basketball league posted a total attendance of 22,538,518 for the recently concluded 2023-24 regular season, surpassing the previous record of 22,234,502, which was set last season.
The NBA also posted a record 873 sellouts this season, up from last season’s 791, with 71% of games selling out, up from 63% in 2022-23. Average attendance at NBA games this season was 18,324, up from 18,077 last season, and arenas were filled to an all-time high 98% capacity.
