The New South Wales Government has announced today (Monday) that Sydney’s Accor Stadium will host the 2024 NRL Grand Final, with talks set to continue over a longer-term deal.
Both the NRL and NRL Women’s Grand Finals will take place at the stadium on October 6 after an agreement was reached between the NSW Government and the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC).
The announcement was made as the NRL kicked off its 2024 season with a double-header at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium over the weekend.
Sydney has hosted the NRL Grand Final every year since the event’s inception, with the exception of 2021 when the match was moved to Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today’s announcement marks the third year in a row that the NSW Government has signed a one-event deal with the NRL to host the Grand Final. Last year, a deal was struck in July, while in 2022 an agreement was not reached until August.
Sydney secured the 2022 game after reports emerged that Brisbane could step in due to uncertainty surrounding the NRL’s agreement with the NSW Government over the development of rugby league infrastructure in the state.
At the time, ARLC chairman Peter V’landys suggested the Grand Final could move between venues from 2023 onwards but this has not been the case, with the event staying in Sydney. According to the Daily Telegraph, the NSW Government paid A$10m (£5m/€6m/$7m) to secure the rights to this year’s Grand Final.
V’landys said today: “Confirming the 2024 Grand Final will be held in Sydney provides certainty to NRL clubs, sponsors and broadcasters – but most importantly of all, it’s exciting news for NRL fans. The NRL and NRLW Premiership seasons will culminate at Accor Stadium on 6 October – and we can’t wait to watch it unfold.”
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns added: “NSW is the home of the NRL and there is no better city in the world to host another incredible Grand Final showdown. The NRL Grand Final is one of our country’s greatest annual sporting events and I can’t wait for a whole new generation of footy fans to get to experience it right here in NSW.”
