Broncos keen on securing stadium naming-rights partner

NFL American football team the Denver Broncos is hopeful of securing a naming-rights partner for its stadium before the end of the year.

The team assumed the contract for naming rights to Mile High Stadium after no new sponsor was found to replace sporting goods retailer Sports Authority, which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

Sports Authority had auctioned the naming rights for the stadium but when no sponsor was forthcoming, the Broncos stepped in.

The Denver Business Journal newspaper reported yesterday (Tuesday) that the Broncos will next month start making quarterly payments to own the rights, but the team remains hopeful of finding a new sponsor.

“They would love to secure a name as soon as possible,” Ray Baker, chairman of the board of directors for the Metropolitan Football Stadium District, which owns the ground, said, according to the Journal. “They would like to secure something by the end of the year.”

The stadium will continue to be officially titled Sports Authority Field at Mile High until a new sponsor can be found. Sports Authority’s contract 20-year contract was due to expire in 2021.
