English Premier League football club Liverpool is considering further expansion work at its Anfield home stadium, with plans in place to install an extra 5,000 seats at the venue.
According to the Liverpool Echo newspaper, phase two of the redevelopment would cost between £40m (€47.2m/$51.7m) and £45m, and move the club a step closer to its aim of boosting capacity at Anfield to approximately 60,000.
The club has had planning permission for the Anfield Road project since 2014 and although it was initially thought that the standard three-year time frame was due to expire in September of this year, it has emerged that this deadline is not until August 2019.
The new Main Stand at Anfield, which opened in September of last year, added a further 8,500 seats to the stadium, increasing total capacity to 54,000.
However, work on the stand was only fully completed last month and with work having been ongoing throughout the 2016-17 season, fans have been forced to use temporary facilities when attending matches.
Andy Hughes, chief operating officer at Liverpool, told the Echo that now the Main Stand is finished, the club will consider its options before pushing forward with the next stage of redevelopment.
“We always said that we would complete the Main Stand and assess its success before looking at any development for Anfield Road,” Hughes said. “Anfield Road provides an opportunity to further develop our stadium in the future and the club’s position is that we’re going to start exploring the viability.
“We are currently working on design, feasibility, cost, capacity and economic viability options. Only once we have completed this comprehensive process and come to a conclusion will be it be the right time to move forward with any development programme.”
