MLB games set for London Stadium

London Stadium is set to host two New York Yankees baseball matches next summer.

The former Olympic Stadium, home to West Ham United, will stage the Major League Baseball games between the Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and London Mayor Sadiq Khan are set to make an announcement on Tuesday about the fixtures, which are scheduled for June 29 and 30, 2019.

The MLB has been looking to stage games in London for some time, having watched the successful staging of NFL and NBA games over the last decade.

London Stadium is seen as an ideal venue because it has a larger playing surface than most major stadiums because it was built with a 400m athletics track.

MLB games have been played in Puerto Rico and Mexico since Manfred became commissioner in 2015. The organisation announced at the start of the month that next season’s opening game will be played in Tokyo.
