Tottenham Hotspur has today (Thursday) confirmed that its Premier League match against Arsenal on March 2 will be played at Wembley, ensuring the earliest possible opening date for its new stadium will be March 17.
Tottenham had been due to move into the new stadium back in September but the opening date has been pushed back a number of times due to problems with the ground’s safety systems.
Tottenham has been playing at Wembley while work on the new stadium continues, with the club having previously confirmed that this weekend’s home match against Leicester City, along with the UEFA Champions League fixture against Borussia Dortmund next Wednesday, will be held at Wembley.
The club’s next home fixture after that is against arch rival Arsenal on March 2 but this game will come too soon for the new stadium to host.
Tottenham today said that remedial works on the stadium’s safety systems are near completion, with the next step to see the club move forward to the final stages of testing the fire detection and alarm system and its integration with the other safety systems.
The club said that the success of this testing is critical to its ability to obtain a safety certificate and therefore open the new stadium. As a result, the Arsenal match will be held at Wembley at 12.30pm on March 2.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said: “Once again, thank you all for bearing with us and for the great support we have received from so many different quarters. These next few weeks are pivotal.”
Tottenham is due to play Crystal Palace at home in the Premier League on March 17. However, should Palace progress to the FA Cup quarter-finals this match would have to be rearranged. Palace plays Doncaster Rovers a week on Sunday for a place in the quarter-finals.
Tottenham’s next scheduled home match after that is against Brighton & Hove Albion on April 6.
Tottenham would need to stage test events before the stadium can officially open. The club said it would provide a further update in due course.
