Perth Stadium chief eyes future Boxing Day Test

Mike McKenna, chief executive of the under-construction Perth Stadium in Australia, has set his sights on the venue hosting future editions of the Boxing Day Test, which currently takes place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (pictured).

Perth Stadium last month missed out on hosting a 2017-18 Ashes Test after the Government of Western Australia confirmed that the match would take place at the city’s WACA Ground .

Although the 2017-18 series will come too soon for the new state-of-the-art venue, McKenna believes Perth Stadium will be perfectly suited to staging high-profile events such as the Boxing Day Test in the future.

“I don’t see any reason why, with a venue like this, great events like the Boxing Day Test and the New Year’s Test, Cricket Australia wouldn’t want to have a look at it,” McKenna said, according to The West Australian newspaper.

“I’d love it, I’d love it (to be in Perth).”

Perth Stadium is due to open in time for the 2018 AFL Aussie rules football season.
