Peruvian Liga 1 football club Universitario has detailed plans to fit a huge new LED screen at the Estadio Monumental, which it claims will be the largest stadium display in the country.

The screen will be fitted in April and will mark the first time the stadium’s main video display has been replaced since the venue opened in July 2000.

Lima-based Universitario said the cost of the project will be covered by main sponsor Apuesta Total. The screen will feature interactions with fans during matches and also allow Universitario to display messages from sponsors.

In the coming weeks, a provisional screen will be fitted at the Estadio Monumental before the installation of the bigger display commences.

Universitario used a 16 x 6 metre screen (pictured) during its recent Noche Crema event at the Estadio Monumental.

With a capacity of just over 80,000, Estadio Monumental is the largest stadium in Peru and the venue also hosts matches played by the Peruvian national team.

It was previously the largest stadium in South America but that title now belongs to River Plate’s Mâs Monumental, whose capacity recently expanded to more than 83,000.
