Mountain America Credit Union has acquired naming rights to the home stadium of Arizona State University’s American football team, the Sun Devils.

The 15-year deal was brokered in partnership between Oak View Group Global Partnerships, Pac-12 MMR and Sun Devil Athletics. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Sun Devil Stadium, which has a capacity of over 53,000, will now officially be known as Mountain America Stadium. The venue has hosted Sun Devils games since 1958 and served as the home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals for 18 seasons until the team moved to State Farm Stadium in 2006.

Mountain America had an existing relationship with ASU as the naming-rights sponsor of the training centre and practice rink for the university’s ice hockey team. The company is also a founding partner of the ice hockey team’s new Mullett Arena, which is currently serving as the temporary home of the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes.

As part of the new deal, Mountain America will donate $250 (£197/€229) to the Sun Devil Club for every field goal made to enhance ASU’s student-athlete experience. The deal will also include a shoe donation programme, scholarship donations, and financial education and internship programmes for student-athletes.

ASU president Michael Crow said: “This is one of the important naming-rights deals in the history of college sports and that speaks to the power and the future of our brand. We are grateful for Mountain America’s investment in our student-athletes and our programmes. This agreement creates a pathway to help us compete at the highest levels of athletics in today’s changing environment.”

Sterling Nielsen, president and chief executive of Mountain America, added: “Mountain America Credit Union is pleased to expand our partnership with Arizona State University and introduce the Mountain America Stadium. This new partnership allows Mountain America to support hundreds of student-athletes and the Arizona community for many years to come through enhanced financial education, scholarship, internship and cause marketing programmes.”

Other college football stadiums with naming-rights deals in place include San Diego State (Snapdragon Stadium), Louisville (L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium), UCF (FBC Mortgage Stadium), Kentucky (Kroger Field), Houston (TDECU Stadium), Minnesota (Huntington Bank Stadium), Rutgers (SHI Stadium), Texas Tech (Jones AT&T Stadium), Vanderbilt (FirstBank Stadium), Syracuse (JMA Wireless Dome), Maryland (SECU Stadium) and Memphis (Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium).
