Suncorp Stadium to be expanded for Horn-Pacquiao bout

Officials at the Suncorp Stadium have said the venue’s capacity will be increased to 60,000 for next month’s boxing match between Jeff Horn and Manny Pacquiao.

According to the Courier Mail, almost 50,000 tickets have already been sold for the WBO welterweight world title bout on July 2, although thousands more went on sale yesterday (Thursday).

The additional capacity will come in the form of purpose-built floor seats that will surround the ring. The seats will be in addition to VIP and high-end ringside seats that had already been planned for the fight.

Queensland tourism minister Kate Jones said: “We’ve been tipping crowds of up to 55,000 people for this fight, but now we could see up to 60,000 fans filling Suncorp Stadium.

“The huge national and international interest in the Battle of Brisbane means we had no other option but to expand capacity at Suncorp Stadium. That would make this the biggest ever sporting event Queensland has ever seen.”

The previous Queensland attendance record of 58,912 was set at the 1997 Super League Grand Final rugby league match between the Brisbane Broncos and Cronulla Sharks.
