Leonsis planning sportsbook at Capital One Arena

Ted Leonsis, owner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, has revealed plans to house a new sportsbook at Capital One Arena in what would mark the first space of its kind in the US.

Monumental owns Capital One Arena, as well as the Washington Capitals NHL franchise and the Washington Wizards NBA team, which both play at the facility.

Speaking yesterday (Wednesday) at the American Gaming Association Sports Betting Executive Summit, Leonsis discussed his plans for the sportsbook, which would be located in the current Greene Turtle sports bar area near the arena’s entrance. The Greene Turtle is set to close on April 9 and turn into a pop-up venue during the Capitals’ play-off campaign.

“There will be a sportsbook inside the building accessible from the outside and depending on the league and depending on the event, it might be accessible from the inside as well,” Leonsis said, according to The Action Network.

Leonsis’ comments come after the D.C. Council last month voted to legalise sports betting.
