Schalke adds shirt-sleeve payment method at Ventis-Arena

German Bundesliga football club Schalke 04 has introduced a new system that will enable fans visiting its Ventis-Arena home to pay for products using their replica team jerseys.

In partnership with online supermarket AllyouneedFresch, the club has added a microchip to replica shirts, allowing them to make payments without the need for cash or a debit card.

Schalke are one of the biggest draws in European football, with an average attendance of 60,300 in 2016-17.

Although the microchip system is still in development, when operational, staff at the Ventis-Arena will scan the AllyouneedFresch logo on the fan’s shirt sleeve, with money debited from their linked bank account.

The innovative partnership will run for four years, from the 2017-18 season to the 2020-21 campaign.

Alexander Jobst, head of marketing at Schalke, said the club is “proud to be able to present the integrated chip payment function”, adding that the deal “further underlines our positions as a leading innovator within the Bundesliga”.
